How Enrollment Works at Gibborrim Academy

Our enrollment process is intentionally designed to ensure the right fit—for your Teen, your family, and our Kung Fu community.

We’re not a “drop-in” martial arts studio. We operate like a university: students enroll in 12-month growth cycles, with a strong focus on commitment, values, and mentorship.

Step 1: Family Fit Interview

This is your opportunity to ask questions and see if our Academy aligns with your vision.

We’ll learn more about your Teen, your goals as a family, and share our expectations for growth, commitment, and respect.
We begin with a private conversation—just you and our lead instructor.

Step 2: 3-Class Evaluation Series

If we both feel aligned, your teen is invited to attend a 3-class evaluation series.
💡 The investment for this evaluation series is $59.99.

During this time:

  • Your Teen experiences real Wing Chun Kung Fu training
  • You observe their focus, effort, and engagement
  • We assess coachability, punctuality, and family dynamics

This is not a free trial—it’s an intentional part of our admissions process, designed to ensure mutual alignment.

We look for:

  • A student who is respectful, eager to learn, and open to challenge
  • A family that values structure, shows up on time, and supports the process

✨ If accepted into the Academy, your $59.99 intro fee will be credited toward your enrollment.

Step 3: Enrollment Invitation

This 12-month enrollment marks the beginning—not the end—of your teen's martial arts journey with us.

If your teen and family meet our standards of respect, readiness, and commitment, you’ll receive an official invitation to enroll in our Academy.

This marks the start of their first 12-month journey in Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Every year, we reassess commitment, growth, and excitement to ensure the best possible experience for each student and family.

💬 “We don’t take everyone—but we give our all to the right students.”

🧭 What We Look For in Families & Students

At Gibborrim Academy of Martial Arts, we don’t just enroll students—we welcome families into a culture of respect, accountability, and personal growth.

We’re selective for a reason:
Our mission only works when everyone shares our values and commitment.

We look for families who:

  • Show up on time and prepared
  • Prioritize personal growth, discipline, and mutual respect
  • Value structure and support long-term growth
  • Support their teen's journey with encouragement, not pressure
  • Communicate openly and partner with our instructors

We look for students who:

  • Are respectful, coachable, and open to challenge themselves
  • Want to be physically active and mentally strong
  • Are curious, courageous, and willing to learn with and from others

✨ We believe martial arts is family work. And the right families make all the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

 What is the instructor's background?

Our Head instructor is a retired U.S. Marine with over 20 years of experience in teaching martial arts and leadership. He has dedicated his life to teaching and continues to expand his knowledge through an EdD program at Creighton University. His military background and educational pursuits ensure that he brings both discipline and a deep understanding of leadership and personal development to the classes.

Is martial arts safe for my teenager?

At first glance, martial arts might seem like a high-risk activity, but rest assured, safety is the top priority in every class. Qualified instructors teach techniques gradually, emphasizing control and proper form to minimize the risk of injury. Protective gear is required during sparring, and rules are in place to ensure a safe and supportive environment. In fact, martial arts can help improve coordination, flexibility, and self-awareness, making students more resilient to accidents both in and out of the Training Hall.

Will martial arts make my teen more aggressive?

Quite the opposite! Martial arts teaches respect, self-control, and discipline. It’s about channeling energy in a positive way, not promoting aggression. Through structured training, students learn how to manage emotions and resolve conflicts peacefully. Rather than encouraging fights, martial arts builds confidence, patience, and focus—qualities that carry over into school, social situations, and beyond.

How does martial arts training fit into my teen's overall schedule?

Our classes are designed with the busy schedules of teen students in mind. We offer classes at convenient times, and since they are exclusive to teenaged students, the environment is tailored to their specific needs and learning pace. Martial arts training can be a healthy and productive outlet for stress, helping teens balance their academic and extracurricular activities.

What is the time commitment and cost?

We offer a 12-month enrollment commitment to ensure that students gain the full benefits of the program. This duration allows for consistent progress and the development of skills over time. The structured timeline also helps instill a sense of commitment and dedication in students. While the cost reflects this long-term commitment, we believe it is a valuable investment in your teen's personal development and safety.

How does martial arts address self-defense?

Wing Chun Kung Fu is a practical and effective self-defense system. Our classes teach students how to protect themselves in various situations, with a focus on avoiding conflict and de-escalating potentially dangerous situations. The techniques are simple yet effective, making them ideal for real-world application. Our instructor's extensive experience ensures that students are learning techniques that are both practical and empowering.

How does school communicate with parents and students?

We prioritize clear and consistent communication with both students and parents to ensure everyone stays informed and engaged.

For Students: During classes, our instructor provides direct feedback to students to help them improve and stay on track. Additionally, we offer a Student Lounge where students can log in to access class curriculum details, school rules, and monitor their personal development progress.

For Parents: We maintain a Parent-Only Facebook group, where we provide weekly updates on what the teens are learning and doing in class. This group is also a place where we share photos, videos, and information about special events designed specifically for our teens.

Monthly Communication: We send out eNewsletters that cover the latest from our Academy, including upcoming events and highlights from the past few weeks. These newsletters are a great way to stay connected with the broader happenings at our school.

Additional Resources: Some of our students and parents also subscribe to our Wing Chun Weekly email. This resource offers insights and tips to help students progress in their Wing Chun journey.

School Updates: Any updates about the school, such as weather closures or important announcements, are posted on our Facebook page to ensure that everyone stays informed promptly.

Karen (Parent of Student)

"Our family loves Sifu Roberts and his teachings. Our son enjoys going and has learned so much from his classes. His classes are practical for real world situations. It's not the showy martial arts that is commonly found in areas"

Sabrina (Parent of Student)

"My daughter took the self defense course and loved it! Just what she was looking for. It was a good mix of learning what level of defense is needed and how to physically perform them. Now she is signed up to begin the teen Martial Arts class."
